Improved Performance

Our vehicle tuning service is here to improve your car’s performance, whether that’s increased power, torque and throttle response, improved handling or better fuel efficiency.

Unlock Potential

Many cars are actually ‘detuned’ in the car manufacturer’s factory so as to offer different versions of cars to the general public. But before this process, they’re technically the same. We can help to unlock your car’s potential by increasing its horsepower for example.

Testing & Analysis

Through Dynamometer testing we can measure your car’s current performance and compare its performance levels after any changes we make. Ensuring you know exactly how and where its performance has increased.

The 3 Stages Of Software & Tuning

Whilst there’s no general ‘rule of thumb’ when it comes to the different stages of car remapping and car tuning, with each calibrator differing slightly on what’s included in each stage. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect from each stage and who they’re most suitable for.

Stage 1

Stage 1 involves a pure software change (remap) with no changes to the hardware of your vehicle. Whilst it’s solely the process of altering data in the Engine Control Unit (ECU), it offers many people the best ‘power to pound’ solution, offering the biggest performance gains at the lowest cost.

The writing of software to the ECU leaves a digital fingerprint on many ECU variants, some of which can be detected by the main dealer should your car go in for any warranty work. This could void your vehicle’s warranty. Our Pre-Tune Inspection and Dyno Testing is optional at this stage, but it can certainly help you to identify any potential issues before tuning work begins and understand how much the performance has improved afterwards.

Stage 2

When you opt for a stage 2 car tune, hardware alterations are also involved alongside the software updates the remapping process provides. The hardware alterations could include parts such as a new cold air intake, upgraded downpipes and sometimes, an intercooler. These hardware upgrades remove restrictions, improve gas flow and increase efficiency.

Stage 2 car tuning is certainly aimed more towards car enthusiasts that are looking at the marginal gains that additional and new parts can provide. However, vehicles that have gone through a stage 2 car tune may not pass an MOT test due to a potential inability to pass the road emissions test.

We certainly recommend our Pre-Tune Inspection and Dyno Testing for any stage 2 vehicle tune, however at this level this is still optional and your discretion.

Stage 3

Stage 3 car tuning involves extensive modifications to the vehicle, such as upgraded turbos, and depending on the expected increase in torque and power generated, engine internals such as pistons and rods (ie a “built engine”). It’s also accompanied by a mandatory pre-tune inspection alongside a detailed Dynamometer analysis due to the increased complexity.

Some changes at this stage could make your car not road legal anymore and as such, Stage 3 is often reserved only for track cars. Whilst it’s certainly the most expensive option, the power and torque gains can be much higher when compared to the gain difference between stages 1 and 2 it’s often the only way to get maximum power for that competitive edge on the race track.

Our Dynamometer Process

The Dynamometer is an essential tool in our arsenal as it allows us to truly analyse and understand a vehicle’s performance. It cleverly measures the torque output of the engine then calculates the power generated during the ‘pull’ and by measuring the drag through the tyres and transmission during the ‘run down’. The figures are run through an equation which ultimately provides you with the flywheel torque and power output.

This is useful to understand its initial performance levels when you bring the car to us and then determine its performance improvements after we’ve tuned it. It can also allow us to diagnose certain issues with the vehicle which would not be possible when testing the vehicle on the road.

Conducting both a Pre-Tune Dynamometer test and another one after we’ve worked on your car is the only sure fire way to be sure of the performance upgrade we’ve provided to you and your vehicle. This is optional on any stage 1 tune, recommended on a stage 2 tune and required on any stage 3 car tune.

Our Software Suppliers

We work with a variety of trusted partners to help us give you a car remapping and tuning solution that provides your vehicle with the performance upgrades you desire.

Ecotune

With over a decade of refined tuning experience, nothing is ever just ‘good enough’ for the Ecotune team. They use bespoke calibration and data logging tools to ensure ultimate perfection in the design, implementation and overall performance upgrades you’ll gain.

As exclusive partners with Ecotune in the Leeds region, we’re proud to say that same attitude is shared by us here at Moorfield German Motors. No matter if you opt for a Stage 1 software tweak or a Stage 3 upgrade, Ecotune’s software and hardware solutions ensure peak performance for your vehicle

APR

APR (Or Audi Performance and Racing) expertly develops and manufactures hardware, software and calibration and data logging tools. They’re the leading tuner for the Volkswagen-Audi Group and have a wide variety of parts available that are sure to help boost your vehicle’s performance.

Whether you’re looking for software upgrades to your Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or new hardware such as intakes, exhausts or intercooler to supercharge your vehicle’s performance, our partnership with APR can help.

RaceChip

RaceChip’s ‘chip tuning’ can help to unlock the potential of your vehicle by making the most of the power reserves within your engine. They simply plug-in to your engine’s sensor wiring harness to intelligently optimise your engine's performance using its onboard ECU to a similar level to a stage 1 software calibration, rather than simply ‘turning everything to the max’. This is beneficial in providing an undetectable Tuning option for vehicles still under manufacturers warranty.

RaceChip can help to provide your car with the performance upgrade you’re looking for, with up to 30% more power and torque alongside up to 20% increased fuel economy too. They also offer a 2-year limited engine warranty on GTS and GTS Black models, giving you peace of mind.

FAQ’s

Our experts are here to guide you through the entire car remapping and tuning process, from your initial contact, through to drop off and pick up afterwards.

Here’s a breakdown of the process and a little insight into the questions we may ask.

When you drop your vehicle off with us, we’ll ask you what fuel octane level you run the vehicle on (this is usually 95 or 99 Ron) and which options you’d like adding to the calibration such as Start/Stop (SS) invert, Hard Cut Limiter (HCL), Pops and Bangs (P&B) and more.

Some of the above options are only available when running specific hardware, so that’s why it’s important that we understand your needs so we can ensure the hardware package is in line with your requirements.

Once we have the vehicle in our workshop, we’ll run a comprehensive system fault scan to ensure there’s no detectable evidence of an issue that would prevent us from proceeding to tune your car. If the car is also having a Dynonameter Pre-Tune test, we’d carry that out next.

If not, the software optimisation process can then begin. If your car’s also in for a stage 2 or stage 3 car tune, we’d then also install the required hardware at this stage.

Once the software and hardware has been installed and fitted, the vehicle is either signed off as finished or in some cases with a stage 3 tune we may need to revise the software or diagnostics if some adjustments are required.

Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes almost always include what’s known as a ‘production file’ which has been vigorously tested to a level that Ecotune are confident that no alterations should be required.

Often also referred to as ‘Car Remapping’ (although this usually refers to software changes only), Car Tuning is the process of modifying a car’s software and hardware beyond its initial ‘factory settings’ to further unlock and improve its performance. The engine’s power and torque can be increased as can the vehicle’s fuel efficiency and handling. Some vehicle owners could also look to alter their vehicle’s appearance too as part of the car tuning process.

The car tuning process is usually split into stages. Here at Moorfield German Motors we offer three stages within our car tuning service.

Stage 1 - Adjusts and optimises the Engine Control Unit’s (ECU) software to provide performance upgrades.

Stage 2 - Improves the car’s primary hardware itself alongside the software upgrades that a stage 1 tune provides.

Stage 3 - Builds on the hardware improvements made at stage 2 with the addition of more involved hardware such as Turbochargers, Camshafts, fuel system upgrades and more depending on the desired power goal..

The main aim of tuning your car is to increase the power and speed of your vehicle, improve its handling and increase the fuel efficiency of your vehicle.

The process of remapping a car involves the reprogramming of the data and software within the vehicle’s Engine Control Unit (ECU). Remapping a car strictly only involves the altering of the factory settings within the software of the car. It doesn’t involve any hardware changes. So essentially a ‘Stage 1’ tune with us, is a ‘remap’ of a vehicle. However sometimes the term ‘remapping’ is used instead of ‘tuning’ for the process of tuning a car’s software and parts.

Whilst technically it’s possible to remap an electric car, like with conventional engines, it takes time to develop systems that allow people to actually reprogram factory electric vehicle control systems.

As you can imagine, Tesla cars are the most widely supported in this regard at the moment, with some tuners offering plug-in performance upgrades with up to an increase of 150+ brake horsepower on some models.

However, here at Moorfield German Motors we specialise in tuning petrol and diesel vehicles and we don’t currently provide an electric vehicle tuning service.

If you use a reputable, experienced tuning specialist, then the actual process of tuning your car shouldn’t ‘damage’ it. Software could only really be ‘damaged’ if power or connection was lost during the process, however most ECU’s can be ‘recovered’ if that was the case.

When it comes to hardware, your chosen tuner should tune your vehicle to the hardware’s capabilities to avoid any failures. However you have to take into consideration that running more power puts more load and wear on the engine components, so the lifespan of the vehicle will be reduced.

However using higher grade engine oil and shortening the time and mileage you drive between each maintenance will help to extend the lifespan of your vehicle.

Yes, as long as the hardware remains within the laws of what the vehicle is being used for. For road vehicles pretty much anything is legal as long as it conforms to the MOT test requirements and doesn’t breach any emissions standards.

Race or track vehicles are not subject to MOT requirements for emissions but may be held to Noise limits for certain race tracks and also different race classes have their own rules on what is “legal” to race in that class such as weight and power limits or certain types of hardware modification.

It’s important to inform your insurers of any remapping or hardware changes you make to your vehicle as undisclosed changes to your vehicle’s makeup could void your insurance in the event of a claim.
