Audi's Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) suspension system, found in some RS models, can only be serviced and repaired by specialists. The DRC system is a purely mechanical system, in which the shock absorbers are interconnected hydraulically by means of central valves in a diagonal configuration.

To accomplish this, the front left shock absorber is connected to the rear right shock absorber and the front right shock absorber to the rear left shock absorber via a central valve with a pressure-equalising chamber.

The task of the system is to reduce body roll and pitch, which typically occur under acceleration/braking and when cornering. The DRC system works on a two-phase principle: 1 - a uniform phase and 2 - a counter-phase.

Sports suspension plus with DRC

The optional sports suspension plus is based on the DRC suspension, but additionally features a three stage adjustable shock absorber rate. The three shock-absorber firmness settings – "comfort", "dynamic", "sport" – can be selected by the driver via the MMI. These adjustments are possible due to adjuster units with servomotors on the shock absorbers.

The adjuster unit is fitted directly to the shock absorber. It consists of a DC motor, which actuates a roller-shaped rotation valve, and a Hall sensor, which signals the adjustment of the motor to the ECD control unit.

Filling system for DRC central valves VAS 6209/3.

The filling system for DRC Central Valves is VAS 6209/3. Pressure less and undamaged DRC central valves, for example valves which have become pressure less due to a leaking shock absorber, can be refilled using the filling system VAS 6209/3.

The hand pump integrated in the system allows pressures of over 20 bar to be built up, thereby enabling the pressure equalising chamber in the DRC central valve to be compressed again.

However if the system is run Pressure Less for extended period of time there is a high chance of internal damage to the Shockers and potentially central Valve Central Valves.

Servicing and Repair:

Diagnosis:

Dealer Specialist tools and expertise are needed to diagnose issues with the DRC system, such as leaks or pressure loss.

Recharging:

Re-pressurising the system after maintenance or repairs is crucial and requires specific Audi-approved equipment.

Component Replacement:

Damaged or worn components like hoses, dampers, or valves may need replacement.

Fluid Replacement:

The hydraulic fluid in the system may need to be replaced as part of maintenance.

Signs of DRC Issues:

Clunking noises: Often heard from the rear shocks when going over uneven surfaces, indicating a potential pressure issue.

Excessive body roll or pitch:

Suggests the system is not effectively counteracting these movements.

Poor cornering: May be due to reduced damping and instability.

Vibrations:

Increased vibration felt through the pedals can be a sign of DRC problems

Where to find DRC service:

As an Independent Audi Specialists, Moorfield German Motors has both experience and specialist equipment to both Diagnose and Repair DRC systems.

It's recommended to have the system checked and serviced regularly to prevent issues and maintain optimal performance, any sudden loss of system pressure WILL result in component damage
