A TCU software surpasses and unlocks the limits that block increased torque, also known as a TCM in a car (transition control module). Although a standard factory transmission control unit is great for daily driving, a performance TCU upgrade unlocks more potential for track use. They create lightning fast gear changes due to the increased clamping pressure, while also predicting optimal gears based on speed. 

Performance-enhancing products such as the BMW ZF8 use an epicyclic planetary gear system. While this term might sound complicated to novice car enthusiasts, it essentially means that the transmission is engineered in such a way that it doesn’t need to change gears by moving its internal components as they are all already touching.
